Samsung has revealed a new payment service which works on all Android devices, not just its own Galaxy smartphones.
Samsung Pay Mini has been launched in the company’s home country of Korea, allowing owners of smartphones with Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher to make credit or debit card payments online.
The service will not work when making payments in stores, like the full-on Samsung Pay on last year’s Galaxy S7. That requires phones to support Magnetic Strip Transmission (MST) tech to mimic card payments.
However, users will be able to make secure online payments via Samsung Pay Mini without having to enter their bank details every time.
Last year it was reported that Samsung had hoped to bring Pay Mini to the iPhone, only to find that Apple would not allow such a service to compete with its Apple Pay offering.
For now, Samsung Pay Mini only works in Korea. However, there are plans to launch it globally. Expect to hear more at Mobile World Congress later this month.
