சஹஸ்ர என்றால் ஆயிரம் என்று அர்த்தம். ஆகவேதான் ஆயிரம் நாமங்களைக் கொண்ட இதன் பெயர் சஹஸ்ரநாமம் என்றாயிற்று.
பெரும்பாலான ஆஸ்தீக பக்தர்கள் பெரிதும் போற்றிப் படிக்கும் விஷ்ணு சஹஸ்ரநாமம் என்பது விஷ்ணுவின் ஆயிரம் நாமங்களைக் கொண்டது. பூஜையே செய்யாமல் ஒரு இடத்தில் அமைதியாக அமர்ந்து கொண்டு அதை தினமும் ஸ்தோத்திரம் செய்வதின் மூலம் அவரை தினமும் ஆயிரம் முறை பூஜித்தற்கான பலனைத் தரும் என்பார்கள்.
