Bacterial vaginosis is a type of vaginal inflammation caused by the overgrowth of bacteria naturally found in the vagina, which upsets the natural balance. Women in their reproductive years are most likely to get bacterial vaginosis, but it can affect women of any age.
BV Causes
A type of bacteria called lactobacillus keeps your vagina slightly acidic so bad bacteria don't grow well. If your lactobacillus levels drop, more bad bacteria move in, and you get BV.
BV Diagnosis
Your doctor will ask about your medical history and do a physical exam. They may give you a pelvic exam and do simple tests, including:
Checking your vagina’s pH or acidity level. Taking a sample of discharge from your vagina to look for cells covered with bacteria
