In the period 80-90’s, foreign surfers “dominated” the big waves and enjoyed the barrel freely in the waters around the Mentawai Islands. From their adventures of hunting waves, one by one, the foreign surfers gave names on “waves” they found.
According to the surfers, surfing in Mentawai is more challenging and fun, because of the wave and beach character are more vary. They named various types of waves, such as mellow, hollow, and barrel, so that the surfer can enjoy different type of waves they can surf.
