Babies pick up many ailments along the way as they get used to life outside the womb and as their immune system develops. Many childhood illnesses and skin conditions are common, mild and pass without incident as the child gets older.
None is as common as cradle cap; the skin condition is developed to some degree by over half of all babies. It is often mild, and requires minimal intervention, although it can worsen or spread to other parts of the body and get infected, so parents have to know what to look out for and how to treat it.
Most babies develop symptoms in the first few weeks and months, and for many it clears up between twelve to twenty four months. It can affect some toddlers too though, and for some babies it is a precursor of sensitivities to other skin problems like eczema.
Often though, without having known another infant recently, new parents are baffled by their baby's sudden outbreak of this unsightly dandruff problem.
