Narcotics Anonymous emerged from the Alcoholics Anonymous Program in the late 1940s, with its first meetings in the Los Angeles, California (USA) area in the early 1950s. The NA program began as a small American movement that has become one of the oldest and largest organizations in the world. For many years, NA grew very slowly from Los Angeles to other major cities in North America and Australia in the early seventies. After a few years, groups had formed in Brazil, Colombia, Germany, India, Ireland, Japan, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. In 1983, Narcotics Anonymous published its Basic Text, which bears the name of the association, which contributed to the enormous growth of NA; By the end of that year, NA had expanded to have a presence in more than 12 countries with 2,966 meetings in the world. Today, Narcotics Anonymous is well established in much of the three Americas, Western Europe, Australia, the Middle East, New Zealand and Eastern Europe. The newly formed groups and NA communities spread across the Indian subcontinent, Africa and East Asia. Currently, the organization is an authentically global, multilingual and multicultural fellowship with more than 61,800 weekly meetings in 129 countries. Narcotics Anonymous books and brochures are available in 41 languages and there are translations in progress in 16 other languages.
WHO IS AN ADDICT?
Most of us do not have to think twice about this question. We know the answer! All our life and our thoughts revolved, in one way or another, around drugs, how to obtain them, how to consume them and how to get more. We lived to consume them and we used them to live. In short, an addicted person is one whose life is controlled by drugs. We are in the grip of a chronic and progressive disease that invariably drags us to the same places: prisons, hospitals and death.
