The expression is a coin that is well-liked and spread, and cannot be understood by translating each word by itself, but by combining it all together. There are many similarities between the proverb and the expressions, but the considerable difference between them is that the proverb contains expression of wisdom, story and rhyme. In addition, the expression usually consists of a phrase in only one section, unlike the proverb which usually has two or three.
The importance of developing a specialized dictionary of equivalents is to enrich the foreign language speaker, of Spanish and Arabic, in terms and linguistic structures to avoid broadening the expression, and to understand a foreign expression through another equivalent in his/her mother tongue. On other hand, it facilitates the interpretation services for such expressions on electronic translation sites.
Spanish is one of the most dependent languages, which should not be ignored, in terms of linguistic expressions and popular proverbs in daily communication. Therefore, the student has to master the greatest number of them, so that he can understand and communicate with its speakers and express himself easily. Moreover, the knowledge of proverbs and expressions is an important tool in the teaching and learning of languages, the wise have recommended the native speakers to learn two hundred of their mother tongue, and recommended the students of foreign language to learn seventy of the studied language. So, how it would be in languages that depend radically on expressions and proverbs just like Spanish or Arabic?
The long historical contacts and influences between the Arab and the Spaniard cultures have left remarkable traces in the two nations thoughts. In addition, Arabic is similar with Spanish in the abundance of proverbs and expressions. Son, we have provided this four-year effort to synthesize the most widely used expressions and proverbs in Spanish, and then we have set up their equivalents of proverbs or expressions in Arabic.
And because the twenty one Arab countries share many of their linguistic heritage, that contributed to make a linguistic logic closeness which governs the patterns of thinking. So, the browser of this dictionary will sometimes find many options of Arabic equivalents either in standard Arabic o different dialects and accents. To guide the browser about these differences, we have sometimes referred to the country in brackets at the end of the equivalent. For those equivalents where we did not define an Arab geographical area, we assume that the Arab listener understands them easily.
