Let’s take a look at the various Punjabi Wedding Rituals.
• Roka
The bride’s family visits the groom’s place to offer the groom their blessing along with various gifts for the family like fruits, clothes, money, sweets also known as shagun.
The Roka ceremony marks the beginning of relationship between the two families and usually begins with a small puja called Ardaas.
• Shagun and Chunni
The girl is draped with a chunni. She is also presented with jewelry, which her mother and sister-in-law help her wear. Everyone present congratulates the couple by feeding them sweets.
• Sangeet
There is a sangeet function hosted by the bride's family,The bride's family play the dholak drums and sing songs in which they tease the groom and his family.
• Mehendi
The last major function before the wedding is decoration with temporary henna (mehndi) tattoos. Mehndi artists are called to the houses of the boy and girl and apply mehendi to the palms of the female family members, and the hands and feet of the bride
- Wedding Day Rituals
• Choora
On the wedding day the rituals at the girl's home begin with the Choora ceremony. The oldest maternal uncle and aunt play an important role in the performance of the ceremony. Choora is basically a set of red and cream ivory bangles, gifted by girl's mama. The girl does not see the choora until she is ready for the marriage. People touch the choora and give their heartiest wishes to the girl for her future married life.
• Haldi
Vatna involves applying a paste made from turmeric powder and mustard oil all over the bride's body by her female friends and relatives. This is done to make the bride look more beautiful on the most special day of her life.
• Sehrabandi
Like the bride's home, the Vatna and Ghara Gharoli are followed by the dressing up of the groom in his wedding attire. Thereafter, the groom's sister ties the sehra on the groom's head.
• Varmala
After the groom enters the wedding hall, he is led to an elevated stand. At the sacred mahurat, the bride too walks in and gets up on the stand. The bride and the groom then exchange vermala.
- Post-wedding Rituals
• Vidaai or Doli
It is a very touching moment. The bride takes puffed rice in her hands and without turning back, throws them over her head backwards in the direction of her family.
• Mooh Dikhai
The mother-in-law bestows a lot of gifts and jewelries on the new bride and other elders also bless her and give her gifts.After this usually the bride returns to her parental home for a day accompanied by her husband and the couple spends the night.
• Reception
This is a party thrown in honor of the newly-weds by the family of the groom. It is a lavish, grandiose affair and guests are invited who come and meet the couple and also have a lot of fun.
