پوشیده بود و آن زره جسمش را اذیت می‌کرد. جبرئیل نازل شد و ضمن رساندن سلام خدا بر پیامبر(ص) گفت: «این زره را از بدنت بیرون بیاور و به جای آن این دعا را بخوان که برای تو و امت تو امان است». علت نام‌گذاری این دعا به جوشن کبیر (به معنای زره بزرگ) نیز همین است.
دعای جوشن کبیر را کفعمی در المصباح و البلد الامین نقل کرده است.
جوشن کبیر، دعایی منقول از پیامبر اکرم(ص) در ۱۰۰ بند، حاوی ۱۰۰۱ نام و صفت خداوند است. دعای جوشن کبیر را جبرئیل به پیامبر اسلام(ص) آموزش داده است. امروزه دعای جوشن کبیردر ایران معمولا یکی از بخش‌های ثابت مراسم شب‌های قدر در ماه رمضان است. عده‌ای نیز به سفارش روایات، این دعا را بر روی کفن خود می‌نویسند.
