Serene Emotional Suite helps users with ASD manage stress and improve executive function skills needed to plan, manage time, control emotions, work with information, stay focused and get tasks done. Serene has two part functionality:
1. An audio-visual interactive planner (does not need smartwatch).
2. Real-time tracking of heart rate, motion and light measured using smartwatch, and correlated with the activities recorded by the planner.
1. Planner:
The purpose of the interactive visual planner is to maximize the executive function potential by taking emotional and environmental factors into consideration. The planner helps the user and their caregiver plan the daily activities, optionally listen to calming music during the activities, record how the user felt about each activity right, use a visual timer to track the duration of the activity, generate a summary of the daily planned activities/routines, the emotions felt during or after the activities throughout the day. The planner can also be used to generate daily visual routines to teach and train those on the spectrum. The planner supports visuals for activities relevant to autistic users of all ages. The planner also helps factor in weather conditions. Further, all this information can be electronically shared as needed with caregivers and therapists, using email, google drive, and social media apps already installed on the smartphone or tablet. All the features of the planner were developed with autistic users point of view. Require an Android smartphone or tablet. None of the features of the planner require a paired Android wearable device.
2. Using Serene with an Android Wear device:
When the user on the spectrum uses an Android wear device that has been paired up with their smartphone or tablet, Serene continuously measures the data from sensors integrated into phones and Android Wear smartwatches. Serene uses this data to predict high stress levels which can induce meltdowns. Serene displays live on the user or caregiver's smartwatch or tablet, the sensor data such as heart rate, motion, and ambient light that is generated from the user's Android wearable device.
Thresholds for heart rate, limb motion, and ambient light (as measured by the Android Wear smart watch) can be set by the caregiver. When the sensor data exceeds the corresponding threshold, a notification is sent to the caregiver and user. An exceeded threshold can indicate a potential high level of stress. The sensor thresholds for the alert generation can be easily adjusted and customized for each user from the caregiver's table or smartphone and tablet.
Serene uses built-in vibration motor, light and speakers on the device to convey an alert. Once high stress is detected, a caregiver and the autistic individual are both alerted via a notification to initiate calming procedures or therapeutic responses.
Further, Serene's built-in planner allows the users to correlate stress levels with their planned activities. In addition to the data collected form the android wearable device, Serene seamlessly integrates the user and caregiver's recording of the emotions for the activity.
Serene can be installed on most of the smart phones, tablets, android TV and Android wear smart watches and smart bands running Android OS. Serene runs on Android version 4.4 and above, i.e. all Android smartphones, tablets, and TVs running Android OS: KitKat, Lolipop, Marshmallow, Nougart, and Oreo.
