The 2018 FIFA World Cup or 2018 FIFA World Cup will be the twenty-first edition of this sporting event, an international men's soccer tournament hosted by the International Football Federation (FIFA) in Russia, hosting the competition for the first time turn. With eleven host cities, the championship will be played between June 14 and July 15. The 2018 edition will be the first in Eastern Europe and the eleventh in Europe after Germany last hosted the tournament on the continent in 2006.
This edition of the World Cup, together with the Summer Universiade of 2013 and the 2014 Winter Olympics, which were also held in Russian territory, are the first sporting events of worldwide importance held in the country since the Summer Olympics of 1980.
FIFA has chosen Russia because of the increased interest of the Russian population in football, thanks to financial investments in sport, the increased importance of the Russian First League and the migration of foreign players to the country, as well as the economic rise of Russia after dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The other countries that competed for the competition were England and the joint candidatures of Holland / Belgium and Portugal / Spain.
Thirty-two teams participate in the competition, and the Russian did not have to play qualifying for being the host. The distribution of seats by continental confederations was announced by the FIFA Executive Committee in May 2015, unchanged from the previous edition. The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) once again called for a new seat for the European continent, but FIFA did not relent and kept the division of seats unchanged until the next edition in Qatar. Thus, thirteen places remained for UEFA (not including the vacancy of host Russia), five for CAF, four for CONMEBOL, four for the AFC and three for CONCACAF. In addition, the intercontinental play-off takes place between a selection of AFC and CONCACAF and another between CONMEBOL and OFC, which does not have a guaranteed place in the world.
