«جوشن کبیر» شامل ۱۰۰ فراز یا بخش است که هر فراز، شامل ۱۰ نام از نام های خداوند است (به جز فراز ۵۵ که شامل ۱۱ نام است). در نتیجه این دعا، شامل ۱۰۰۱ نام از نام‌های خداوند است .
تعداد زیادی از نام‌ها، تعابیر و اصطلاحات به کار رفته در این دعا، برگرفته از قرآن هستند .
در هر فراز ، کلمات به‌کار رفته حالت موزون و آهنگین دارند ؛ چیزی که بسیار شبیه به آرایه‌ی ادبی سجع در ادبیات فارسی است . به عنوان نمونه ، در فراز اول ، کلمات «رحیم»، «کریم»، «مقیم»، «عظیم»، «قدیم»، «علیم»، «حکیم» و «حلیم» به کار رفته‌اند که به علت مشابه بودن حروف پایانی، به این فراز حالت آهنگ‌گونه داده‌اند .
