Obesity researchers use a standard called the body-mass index (BMI) to determine a person's weight-related health risk. It's a simple calculation of a person's weight-to-height ratio.
The BMI is used to assess how much an individual's body weight differs from what is normal or desirable for a person of his or her height. But BMI should only be used as a rough guide – because it doesn't take bone or muscle mass into account. Therefore, if you have big bones or a lot of muscle, you'll weigh more and so your BMI result may be inaccurate.
