Peoples' faces can drastically affect how others perceive their intelligence, fitness, competency, and other significant traits; facial appearance is therefore one of the most important factors governing everyday interactions. Unfortunately, approximately 127,000 people per year acquire a form of facial paralysis (FP), like synkinesis, Bell's Palsy, etc., which can affect their facial appearances. Over half of FP patients may experience psychological distress and withdraw socially because of their FP.
FP treatment typically uses: physical therapy, Botox injections, surgery, and/or electrical stimulation therapy. In part owing to the varied causes of FP and its complex treatment plans, FP care teams can include multiple specialists (e.g., surgeons and therapists). Interactions among these specialists can be complicated, and there are currently no technologies intended to support these teams' interactions between themselves or with patients. Therefore, we must test our mobile application to better suit all collaborators' needs, including the patients', to facilitate recovery.
The MyFace is a research project designed and developed at the College of Information Sciences and Technology at Pennsylvania State University. This research study aims to understand how to effectively integrate self-care technology into this complex healthcare scenario to benefit the patient-clinician relationship, support patient self-tracking activities, and support facial paralysis patients' social, emotional and informational support seeking behaviors.
