This free app is designed for a study at the University of Colorado Boulder. The main goal of the study is to understand the relationship between the well-being of residents and industrial odors in four communities in Colorado, in the USA, namely Greeley, Fort Lupton, North Denver and Pueblo. North Denver community includes: Globeville, Chaffee Park, Sunnyside, Elyria Swansea and Commerce City. The participants in the study are asked to use the app to document when they smell an odor, and describe what the odor smells like (e.g. dog food, natural gas . fracking, car exhaust, tar/creosote/asphalt, sewer, animal, livestock, chemical, rotten eggs, etc).
The app will report the time, day, and location of the odor. Data from the app will be
emailed to the study team for subsequent analysis. The information is also being emailed to the Denver Department of Environmental Health which is the entity that oversees odor complaints in the City of Denver. This was requested by Groundwork Denver so that the complaints could lead to action in reducing odors in North Denver. Data will also be collected from other places for comparison. For example, Denver, Boulder, Fort Collins, Golden, Colorado Spring, Grand Junction, Aspen (Colorado), Cheyenne, Laramie, Casper, Douglas, Wright, Gillette, Sheridan, Buffalo, and Worland.
Other people are welcome to use the app for their studies by changing the email address.
