SARDOW aims to minimize human exposure to dangerous levels of radiation emitted by the mobile phones, which use antennas for the transmission and reception of radio frequency (RF) signals. RF signals pose long-term and severe health risks, such as cancer, reproductive dysfunction, single- and double-stranded DNA breaks, immune dysfunction, stress protein synthesis in the brain, altered brain development, or sleep and memory disturbances. Controversies exist about which levels of RF are safe, and there are no conclusive studies on the long-term health effects. Specific absorption rate (SAR) is a measure of the rate at which energy is absorbed by the human body when exposed to a radio frequency (RF) electromagnetic field; Federal Communication Commission limit for public exposure from cellular telephones is a SAR level of 1.6 watts per kilogram. There are government guidelines for limiting RF exposure, such as keeping the phone away from the body, especially the head, but no universal solution exists.
SARDOW application reduces SAR levels on mobile devices during phone calls, as this is when the device is closest to the head, resulting in the most harmful effects of the RF waves on the brain. By measuring RF levels during various uses of the cell phone, data transfer creates much higher levels of RF, compared to only cellular signal use. During a phone call, it is very rare that a user actively uses any applications, yet, needless updates and synchronizations continue throughout the duration of a call.
Once SARDOW is downloaded on the phone, the user has a choice to select settings to automatically turn off Wifi signal, Mobile Data and Bluetooth during a call, or when a phone is in black screen mode. It is a user’s choice to either turn off any or all of the three settings. Once a call starts, Wifi, and/or mobile data, and/or Bluetooth are off for the duration of the call. Once a call ends, WiFi, Mobile Data and Bluetooth turns back on automatically.
Initial testing was conducted on the working prototype with ~500 calls, measuring average RF exposure when Wifi, Mobile Data, and Bluetooth were enabled or disabled, during active phone calls, and with various cellular signal strengths. In accordance with the compliance rules, during the calculation of the total RF levels, each of the settings must be tested separately and then added to calculate the total RF. Results showed over two times reduction in RF exposure when Wifi or Mobile Data is disabled, while not compromising the quality of the phone signal and not limiting user experience.
The solution is free to the public, while also not requiring any additional hardware costs. In addition, the solution extends phone battery life by limiting its drainage during unnecessary frequent updates. SARDOW is a solution for reducing RF exposure and lowering long-term health risks for mobile phone users.
