La provincia de Alicante cuenta con un rico y variado patrimonio geológico e hidrogeológico, caracterizado por la presencia de numerosos enclaves singulares, gran parte de los cuales se encuentran ya identificados, aunque de forma dispersa, en diversos estudios y publicaciones tanto de la Diputación Provincial de Alicante como del Instituto Geológico y Minero de España (IGME).
El patrimonio geológico está formado por elementos geológicos que presentan una especial singularidad debido, fundamentalmente, a su interés científico y/o didáctico. El patrimonio geológico forma parte del patrimonio natural e incluye formas, elementos y/o estructuras originadas por cualquier proceso geológico. Está formado por todos aquellos enclaves relevantes para cualquier disciplina de la Geología por lo que es frecuente que se realicen estudios temáticos, utilizándose términos como patrimonio mineralógico, geomorfológico, paleontológico o, como en el caso que nos ocupa, hidrogeológico.
Los Lugares de Interés Hidrogeológico (LIHs) son enclaves singulares relacionados con el patrimonio hídrico natural de interés histórico y cultural. En ellos se con-
jugan, por tanto, aspectos científicos, culturales, sociales, medioambientales, didácticos y recreativos. En conjunto, los LIHs forman el Patrimonio Hidrogeológico, compuesto, de acuerdo con Durán (1998), por todos aquellos lugares en los que el recurso agua presenta particular interés por su belleza natural, desde un punto de vista histórico, por su importancia o por su uso específico en un momento dado, por su belleza arquitectónica directamente relacionada con el uso del agua, así como por el volumen que representa dentro del total de los recursos de la comunidad.
De la definición anterior se deduce que forman parte del Patrimonio Hidrogeológico elementos ligados directa o indirectamente con los acuíferos o con el agua subterránea, como por ejemplo, una surgencia o un acuífero completo. Pero también aquellos lugares que muestren el particular uso que de las aguas subterráneas hace el hombre y no sólo en la actualidad, sino también los enclaves que muestran la utilización de las aguas subterráneas durante siglos, utilizando las más diversas tecnologías. En una concepción más amplia, también los relieves modelados por la acción del agua.

They therefore play scientific, cultural, social, environmental, educational and recreational aspects. Together, the LIHs form the Hydrogeological Heritage, made up, according to Durán (1998), of all those places where the water resource is of particular interest for its natural beauty, from a historical point of view, for its importance or for its specific use at any given time, for its architectural beauty directly related to the use of water, as well as for the volume it represents within the total resources of the community.
From the above definition, it can be deduced that elements linked directly or indirectly with aquifers or with groundwater, such as upwelling or a complete aquifer, are part of the Hydrogeological Heritage. But also those places that show the particular use of groundwater by man and not only today, but also the sites that show the use of groundwater for centuries, using the most diverse technologies. In a broader conception, also the reliefs modeled by the action of water.
