You'll get an introduction to the game from Professor Birch, a Pokemon researcher. You'll get the option to select a male character, or a female character, and then your name. The screen will fade, and you'll find yourself in the back of a moving truck. Turns out you and your family have just shifted to Littleroot Town. Hop out of the truck and your Mom will come out to greet you. Once you're indoors, head up the stairs and set your clock. Unlike Gold, Silver and Crystal, the clock here controls tides, rather than day and night. When you're satisfied, press A to confirm the time. Exaamine your PC to the left and select Item Storage. Choose to Withdraw a Potion, then head downstairs.
