Shiva wordt meestal aanbeden in de vorm van Lingam. Andere populaire namen geassocieerd met Shiva zijn Mahadeva, Mahesha, Maheshvara, Shankara, Shambhu, Rudra, Rishikesha (Man of Knowledge), Hara, Trilochan, Devendra (Betekenis Chief of the Gods) en Trilokininatha (Betekenis Lord of the Three Realms).
Maha Shivratri (Sivarathiri) is een festival dat elk jaar op de 13e dag is gevierd op de 13e dag in de Krishna Paksha van de maand Phalguna in de Hindoe-kalender. Het wordt beschouwd als de grootste vreedzame bijeenkomst in de wereld waar ongeveer 100 miljoen (10 crore) mensen naar verwachting zouden bezoeken tijdens de Maha Kumbh Mela in 2013 in Allahabad. Het wordt elk derde jaar vastgehouden op een van de vier plaatsen bij rotatie: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik en Ujjain. Zo wordt de Kumbh Mela elk twaalfde jaar bij elk van deze vier plaatsen gehouden. Ardha ("Half") Kumbh Mela wordt gehouden op slechts twee plaatsen, Haridwar en Allahabad, elk zesde jaar. De rivieren op deze vier plaatsen zijn: de Ganges (Ganga) bij Haridwar, de samenvloeiing (Sangam) van de Ganges en de Yamuna en de mythische Saraswati in Allahabad, de Godawari bij Nashik, en de Shipra bij Ujjain. De naam Kumbh Mela komt van Hindi, en in de originele Sanskriet en andere Indiase talen is het vaker bekend als Kumbha Mela. Kumbha betekent een werper en mela betekent eerlijk in het Sanskriet.
