There are no performance bonuses associated with clothing and weapons this time around,
which is unfortunate if you really enjoyed that aspect of Soul: Broken Fighting Calibur,
but great if you want to wear all of the matching pieces of the Santa costume without feeling like your fashion choices are compromising your effectiveness.
Regardless of which fighter you choose to play as and what he or she is wearing,
Broken, like previous SoulCaliburs offerings, is easy to pick up and grasp the basics of.
You can move in eight directions using the D pad or the analog nub,
and face buttons are used to guard and to perform basic horizontal attacks, vertical attacks, and kicks.
That's really all you need to know to get started, though you'll find that there are plenty of more advanced techniques to master if you check out the character-specific move lists in the useful Training mode.
Oddly, Destiny doesn't feature an Arcade mode in which to pit your chosen combatant against a number of opponents en route to a matchup with a boss.
In its place is Trials mode, which incorporates three distinct score-based challenges in Attack, Defense, and Endless flavors.
In the Trial of Attack you're pitted against five opponents and earn score bonuses for playing aggressively and for landing combos.
The Trial of Defense is a little longer and culminates in a boss battle against Algol from Soul: Destiny calibur,
so in that respect it's a lot like that game's Arcade mode.
The main difference here is that you score points and earn bonuses for guarding against your opponent's attacks and retaliating quickly.
Endless Trial is a survival mode of sorts, except that your fighter regains all of his health between rounds.
Seeing how many of the increasingly tough opponents you can make it past without ever losing is a lot of fun,
but your score isn't based on that.
Rather, every time you land a blow you earn points, and there's a score multiplier that goes up when you hit your opponent but falls back down when you get hit.
The scoring system in the trials means there's some fun to be had replaying them to beat your best performances,
but it's unfortunate that there's no way for you to compare your high scores with those of other players online.

Soul Calibur is a 3D fighting game that pits two fighters against each other in large, open arenas. Players must battle their opponent by gauging timing, distance and location in the ring as characters can be knocked off the edge when struck or thrown properly.
As "interesting" as it was to see Darth Vader and Yoda make guest appearances in the Soulcalibur universe, Broken Destiny's Kratos makes much more sense when considering the game's setting. The only other elements worth noting that were removed from the formula are the many unlockables and extras that have traditionally gone hand-in-hand with Soulcalibur games. Broken Destiny doesn't have many extras to speak of, though you will be spending quite a bit of time unlocking items for character creation and earning special honors for your Records.
Broken Destiny has several options for jumping into battle. You can opt for playing a Quick Match, which is exactly that: a single battle with a foe. There are also Trials to face, which are essentially survival-style modes that task you with racking up points and keeping your character alive. Then there's Ad Hoc multiplayer, a Creation tool for building your own characters and the standard Training mode.
The mode that takes the longest to "complete," however, is the Gauntlet. This story-driven, mission-based affair occupies a universe outside of the canonical Soulcalibur narrative. It's a comical story about you (and whichever character you select) following Hilde and her party around the world as they search for medicine for Hilde's father. It has little to do with the actual Soulcalibur story and is more fun and games than anything else.
Each mission in the Gauntlet is comprised of several mini-sections that only last a second or two each. Usually, you're only objective during these brief few moments is to survive a series of attacks and then counter appropriately. With this in mind, it's safe to say that the Gauntlet is more of an instructional tool than anything else, as your failures are greeted with helpful text that give you the steps needed to emerge victorious.

Drama ensues from pitting one fighter against another, watching how the differences in style play out. While many of these dramatic confrontations have been played out before, two new characters offer something fresh.
Regardless of which fighter you choose to play as and what he or she is wearing,
Broken, like previous SoulCaliburs offerings, is easy to pick up and grasp the basics of.
He's more challenging to play, but grants a range of quick attacks and feints that benefit the skilled player.
Instead of presenting a series of rounds however, each chapter breaks down into short tutorials lasting a few seconds. The intricacies of guarding, executing critical finishes, how to use the new active purge system - all are explained via these short missions.
It's highly informative, but a total bore. You spend more time flipping through narrative text and explanations for each mission than you do actually fighting.
