Maha Shivratri (Sivarathiri) est un festival célébré chaque année le 13ème jour de la Paksha de Krishna du mois de Phalguna dans le calendrier hindou. Ce festival est de la plus haute importance pour les dévots de Seigneur Shiva. Mahashivaratri marque la nuit où Lord Shiva a joué le "Tandava" et c'est la journée que le Seigneur Shiva était marié à Parvati. Cette journée est souvent célébrée avec des prières spéciales et des rituels offerts à Shiva, notamment l'Abhishek. Ce rituel, pratiqué toute la nuit, est souvent effectué toutes les trois heures avec de l'eau, du lait, du yogourt et du miel. Les feuilles Bel (A moule Marmelos) sont souvent offertes au Dieu hindou, car il est jugé nécessaire pour une vie réussie. L'offrande des feuilles est considérée comme si importante qu'elle croyait que quelqu'un qui leur offre sans aucune intention sera grandement récompensé.
Kumbh Mela est un pèlerinage de masse hindou de la foi dans lequel les hindous se rassemblent pour se baigner dans un sacré rivière. Il est considéré comme le plus grand rassemblement pacifique dans le monde où environ 100 millions (10 crore) étaient censés visiter lors de la Maha Kumbh Mela en 2013 à Allahabad. Il est tenu toutes les troisième année à l'une des quatre endroits par rotation: Haridwar, Allahabad (Prayaga), Nashik et Ujjain. Ainsi, la Kumbh Mela est tenue à chacun de ces quatre endroits toutes les douzième année. Ardha ("Half") Kumbh Mela est tenu à seulement deux places, Haridwar et Allahabad, toutes les sixièmes années. Les rivières de ces quatre endroits sont: les Ganges (Ganga) à Haridwar, le confluent (Sangam) du Gange et de la Yamuna et de la mythique Saraswati à Allahabad, le Godawari chez Nashik et le Shipra à Ujjain. Le nom Kumbh Mela vient d'Hindi et dans les langues originales sanscrites et autres langues indiennes, elle est plus souvent appelée Kumbha Mela. Kumbha signifie un pichet et Mela signifie une foire à Sanskrit.
